The history is connected with history of nearby temples Thirukandiyur Divyadesam and Thirupattur Brammpureeswarar. There is a story interlinking Brahmapureeswarar Temple at Tirupattur near Trichy.  According to the legend, Lord Brahma Devar became very proud as He was the Creator and also had five heads just like Shiva. This made himself feel superior to Lord Shiva and once He went to Kailayam to meet Lord Shiva. On seeing someone with five heads Goddess Parvathy concluded that it should be Lord Shiva only and without even having a look at his face, She started performing Paadha Pooja to Him. Brahma very well knew that She was performing the puja thinking that He was Lord Shiva,

Despite which He kept quiet and did not stop Her. As this was happening Shiva came there and understood the fact immediately that Parvathy had no idea that it was Brahma. He became very angry with Brahma Devar and plucked his fifth head. Since then Brahma has been having only four heads as Chaturmuha. Shiva also stripped Brahma of his power and responsibilities of creation.

But then Lord Shiva got afflected with Brahmahatthy Dosham The fifth head of Brahma got stuck to His palm and would not drop off. He started on a pilgrimage worshipping various temples to be absolved of his sin. He used the skull which was stuck in His palm as the begging bowl. The begging bowl would not fill up and Shiva was very hungry. At Bitchandar Koil Goddess Lakshmi as Poornavalli Thayar got rid of Shiva’s hunger. Since Lord Shiva came here with a begging bowl and his hunger was satisfied he is being worshipped as "Bikshandar" here. Lord Shiva noticed that though His hunger was fulfilled, but the skull was still stuck with His palm.

He was only partially absolved of his sin. To attain complete absolution, He requested Lord Maha Vishnu and was instructed to worship him at Thirukandiyur Divyadesam. Lord Shiva went to Thirukandiyur Temple and perfomed the poojas accordingly. He had a holy bath in the temple tank and finally got absolved of the sin completely. The Skull got removed from His palm. Hence the temple tank is being worshipped as "Kapala Theertham". Kabalam means Skull.
