The 108 Divyadesams are a sacred group of 108 Lord Maha Vishnu temples, celebrated by the Azhwars ( Alwars ) - the Divine Poet-Saints of Vaishnavism. Except for Madhurakavi Alwar, all 11 Azhwars composed pasurams, beautiful Tamil Hymns called Pasurams, out of Deep Bhakti, a Devotion, as emotional outpourings to the Lord, praising Lord Maha Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi Devi in these Holy Shrines. These devotional compositions are collectively known as " Mangalasasanam ", a Traditional Form of Worship in Divyadesams.
Spiritual Significance – Nalayira Divya Prabandham
The Pasurams were later compiled by the great Acharya Sri Nathamuni as the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, also known as the Tamil Ved. This sacred scripture distills the essence of the Vedas, Upanishads, and Brahma Sutras in simple, devotional Tamil.
Among all 108 Divyadesam Temples, three are particularly famous among tourists and pilgrims:
-
Srirangam Divyadesam (Tamilnadu) – The foremost temple, praised by all 11 Azhwars with 247 Pasurams.
-
Tirumala Tirupati Divyadesam (Andhra Pradesh) – Sung by 9 Azhwars with 73 Pasurams.
-
Thirukkudanthai Sarangapani Temple (Kumbakonam, Tamilnadu) – Sung by 7 Azhwars with 51 Pasurams.
Our Divyadesam Tour Packages often start with these sacred sites, creating a perfect introduction for first-time visitors.
